Today we are having our holiday luncheon at work. We were all asked to contribute and I made my famous chicken pesto pasta. I hope the work family enjoys it! Happy Friday and happy eating y’all.

Who gave u permission to rearrange me
certainly not me
who told you that it was alright to love me
certainly, certainly not me

I was not looking for no love affair
and now you wanna fix me
Was not looking for no love affair
and now you want to mold me
I was not looking for no love affair
now you wanna kiss me
Was not looking for no love affair
and now you wanna control me
hold me

image

I know you’re really trying to get creative with me love
and that’s alright, but
you tried to get a little tricky turned my back
and then you slipped me a mickey.

Certainly, certainly, certainly not me
Certainly, certainly, certainly not me
Certainly, certainly, certainly not me
Certainly, certainly, certainly not me

I don’t need nobody telling me the time

When you’re running twenty minutes late to a lunch date with friends, don’t expect the food to be oh so fabulous. And that’s not hyperbole…I literally ran to the restaurant after I found a parking space. Meter parking in downtown Columbia is the worst.

At first I thought, “this is great!” Delayed gratification most times results in a satisfying experience (food, sex, fashion). But as life keeps reminding me, I was WRONG! Menkoi Ramen House was not all it was hyped up to be. And let’s get something clear…this is not a bad review. I like to keep it positive and light and will continue to do so. Menkoi Ramen House just disappointed me.

image

Menkoi is like the hot guy you see at a chic downtown restaurant. You walk over and ask “what time do you get off?” When you finally get him alone and in bed…the results are less than you expected. The food wasn’t bad but it wasn’t great. When a ramen house comes to a southern capital you expect a level of authenticity, flavor, and pizzazz.

This is the first time I’ve said this on the blog but I feel like I could have jumped in the kitchen and done better. The dumplings were good though. It’s hard to fuck up dumplings I guess. And I guess I was wrong again -after reading my post- this is a bad review.

Tofu has been my saving grace these past few weeks. I’m on a vegetarian diet and it hasn’t been easy. The switch hasn’t been exactly hard but the absence of meat always makes me feel like my plate is missing something.

image

Luckily tofu has filled the void. I know tofu is old news and passe but it’s a beacon of shining light to me. Whenever I’m tempted to add meat to my dishes, I just add tofu. Not only am I receiving the much needed protein…mentally I’m satisfied because my plates look fuller.

image

But I have noticed that I’m spending more time and money at Asian restaurants. They have the best selection when it comes to vegetarian options. My American counterparts need to step their game up.

Brunch isn’t brunch if cocktails and friends aren’t involved. Cocktails have a way of increasing the fun factor of the meal and lead to candid conversations of weekend sexcapades. But picking the right spot is essential.

Cafe Strudel was my brunch choice this past Sunday and the spot was fantastic. Eclectic and local art decorate the walls. Trendy and hip downtowners come in and out. And a great selection of food makes Cafe Strudel oh so charming.

image

The location is big enough so you won’t feel cramped but small enough to entice you to mingle with fellow brunchers. It was my first time there but it won’t be my last. I opted for the ‘Hangover Hashbrowns’ and they were so good!

If you ever visit Columbia SC…visit Cafe Strudel for brunch. You won’t be disappointed. I’m dying to go back.

A Boy, A Burger, & A Birthday.

image

My 28th year on planet Earth is off to a great start. I spent yesterday with my photographer friend working on forthcoming personal style posts and we had a blast. But the highlight of the day came when he took me out for a birthday lunch. It was my first time at Bang Bang Burger and it won’t be my last.

image

The selection of burgers is perfect. Beef burgers with egg, some with guacamole, and others with apple compote. Yummy! I ordered the Cowboy (sharp cheddar, grilled onions, bacon, and homemade BBQ sauce). It was fantastic.

image

For me, Bang Bang Burger is a standout.  Their original recipes, superior choice of beef, and attention to sauce pairings makes them a front runner that out paces Five Guys, SmashBurger, and any other trendy burger joint.

Bang Bang Burger is located in Charlotte, NC. If you’re ever in the area and want the best burgers on the market…make it your business to eat there!

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day and my favorite! I opted for a vegetarian spread. It was difficult because I’m southern and we southerners love our PORK. Ha!

Oatmeal with protein, sweet potatoe baked in coconut oil, and cherry juice were my picks. Simple? Yes. But one of the most nutricious and tasty breakfasts I’ve had in awhile.

Happy Saturday!

Jared
